Ever since I can remember cats have been part of my family.

Tigger was always there, she was very tolerant of the noisy play of my brother, me and our friends. We loved her and she was part of our gang. As a young child on a family holiday at a Wiltshire farm bed and breakfast I met Jess, a working collie. Apparently Jess wasn’t usually much bothered by guests, but we just “clicked” and I spent as much of the holiday as I could with her, fascinated by her intelligence, agility and affectionate nature. At the end of the week I begged my Mum and Dad to take me into the local town to buy Jess a toy with the pocket money I had saved. From then on I knew my life would be spent with animals.

I qualified in 1993 from the Royal Veterinary College, where I had the privilege of being taught by some inspirational people. Professor Bob Michell deserves a special mention for teaching me the value of thinking for myself, so does Dr Jonathan Elliot, for showing how a thorough knowledge of biological science translates to the best patient care.

I find all aspects of veterinary practice fascinating and have tried hard to keep up to date with the latest ideas, not only for the diagnosis and treatment of disease, but also the nutritional and psychological well-being of animals. I have attained ESPVS certificates in feline practice and small animal surgery and attended courses in a wide range of subjects throughout my career.

I had to wait until I started working as a vet to get my first cats Rose and Floyd and my first dog Ella. Between them they looked after me until a very special cat called Berry introduced me to a very special lady called Fiona, and we were married in 2001. Our family has grown over the years and we have shared much happiness together and consoled one another in grief.

Fiona and I share our home with our lively and loving rescue dogs Nicos and Freya, and our equally lively and loving cats Delilah, Jake, Moomin, Florence, Sophie and Woody.
